chapter 13
“MMM, MMM. MISS ROXIE’S done got herself a beau!”
Roxie turned from peeking out the curtains at Ty’s retreating figure. “I do not.”
Tundy chuckled, her plump figure encased in a lime green velour jogging suit. In Raleigh, Roxie had only seen Tundy in the uniform provided by the maid service. She was now profoundly grateful for that fact.
Tundy pulled back the curtain and waved. “Bye, Mr. Not-No-Beau!”
Roxie grabbed the curtain and yanked it closed. “Tundy! Will you stop that?”
“I don’t know why you’re so shy. He’s a hottie!”
Roxie had to agree. Ty also seemed like a genuinely nice guy, and not once had he touched her beyond a lingering handshake when he’d first arrived—which was a nice break after Nick’s too-physical presence.
She couldn’t believe he’d kissed her, and with so much passion that her skin still quivered with the memory, as if his large, warm hands were still stroking her back and molding her to his hard body.
She shivered. It was a good thing Ty had come. Not only had his presence forced her to calm down but he’d also soothed her vanity.
Why couldn’t Nick be more like Ty, who’d spent a good hour recalling past times, asking her about her activities since she’d arrived in Glory, and paying her extravagant compliments? Not once had he treated her like an imbecile or suggested that she couldn’t be trusted. In fact, he’d looked at her as if he thought she could do anything she wanted.
“Yo’ momma sure likes that Mr. Henderson. She said he was a catch.”
“Which is a good reason to be leery of him.” After all, Mother had liked Brian, too.
Tundy beamed. “You are coming along nicely, Miss Roxie. Mr. Blondie-Locks can’t compare to that hot cop.”
“Nick is not hot.”
Tundy lifted her brows so high that they almost disappeared into her red curls.
Roxie sighed. “Oh, all right. He’s hot! But at least Mr. Henderson doesn’t act like I can’t do anything—like, oh, conduct an investigation. I bet Clara and the Murder Mystery Club would have better luck solving this case than anyone else in this town, including Sheriff High-and-Mighty Sheppard!”
“Miz Roxie, you done gone CSI on me and I didn’t even know it!” Tundy shook her head. “Not that I’m surprised. You was like a bulldog once you got wind that Mr. Parker was cat walking on you. I never seen such a determined woman in my life.”
“You think I could be a good investigator?”
“The way you nosed out Mr. Parker and his shenanigans? Honey, you’re a natural.”
Roxie sat a little straighter. “Thank you, Tundy. I appreciate your confidence.”
“That Mr. Henderson seemed to think you could do it, too. Or he did when he wasn’t busy tellin’ you about how runnin’ the newspaper was puttin’ him on good footin’ with all the local power people, and soon he’d be runnin’ for election himself.” Tundy stretched, her pale, freckled stomach showing between her velour top and sweatpants. “It’s almost four, isn’t it? Yo’ momma and I are making matzo ball soup.
